Icon Showcase for the week of May 6

Ark.pngWelcome to the Icon Showcase! These articles put the spotlight on some of the latest, greatest icons by resident forumgoers and artists, hand-picked by the staff for excellence in aesthetics, usefulness, and attention to detail. Whether you’re a newcomer to customization looking for a solid recommendation, or just don’t have time to check up on all of the releases each week, this feature is just for you. This week, we have a few great ones to mention, ranging from adventurous treasures to old-school computing glory.

The Iconfactory has made a tradition out of releasing free pixel goodies for your desktop– long before some of you even thought about customization– but their new Indiana Jones iconsets may be the most exciting, creative method for movie promotion yet. Created by the Factory’s own Anthony Piraino, these icons contain treasures and other gems from the Lucasfilm trilogy. As of this writing, sets are available for Raiders and Temple of Doom, but expect Last Crusade and Crystal Skull sets to make their appearance soon. All sets are downloadable at the Iconfactory website.

Safari, released in 2003 to much fanfare from Mac users, has never received an icon update, save for a 512×512 refresh to prep for Leopard. Dustin Schau sets out to remedy this problem somewhat with his Document Icons, taking the “download” indicator icons and giving them some proper treatment. Available in blue, graphite and filled-in “Safari Blue” variants, you may not notice the change all the time, but when you do, you’ll be glad you made the upgrade. The iconset is available in the forums.

Do we really need to say anything else? As far as we fall behind in the “official merchandise” department, these MacThemes t-shirt icons by new member Mitch Bartlett (also known as “Funk”) make us very proud indeed. If you’re looking for something fashionable to adorn your computer icons with, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this. Mitch’s icons are available at the forums, in all their light purple polo glory.

I’ll be honest: this isn’t a “pure” iconset, but given the overwhelming nostalgia invoked from the icons, I think this deserves a special mention. Cophland is an iPhone theme by forum member AceOhosa; for those of you who don’t know your Apple trivia, “Copland” was the name of Apple’s in-house upgrade to the classic Mac OS. While the project never saw the light of day (why do you think we have Mac OS X?), the Platinum appearance is one of the traits that made its way into later versions of the Mac OS, and if you remember those days as well as I do, well, this just may tickle your fancy (hooray, multi-threaded Finder!) The Summerboard theme is available at the forums.
