Cthulhu “Khlûl’hloo”

While, I can’t pronounce the name, there is still something endearing about this little fellow. Something that screams both “adopt me” and “check if I bounce!”. This icon looks like some of the odd creatures I’ve seen conceived using the Spore Creature Creator. It is like, most of my favorite icons, slightly nonsensical, and smile inducing. Forum member albinoAZN create this spot on recreation of the vinyl toy designed by John Kovalic and inspired by H.P Lovecraft’s fictional creature. The icon can be gotten here, however, for the toy you’ll have to venture to here.

I really like the toy. I also like albinoAZN trying to improve his skills. But I really don’t like seeing cutout work featured.
There is no harm is using reference material, but by doing so; the reference material should also be mentioned.

There are so many talented people on these forums, who create instead of outline - these are the people who should get the recognition.

Luis, I think you were the one who posted the interview about Jonas - why not make more of those, I really enjoyed reading that.

This is NOT a cutout. Linked below is a screenshot of the layers.

I hand painted this with my tablet. I guess that’s sort of a compliment though. But still, you’re wrong.

my friend, what i mean is that you not only used a reference image, but you draw over the reference image lines, just take your icon, and overlay with any image of the toy from google images.

what i mean is you basically “ported” it to another canvas and saved it, you may have painted it… but at the end, the result is the same as long there’s nothing different and creative upon the basic shape, i understand it might be fun to do for you, but i dont think it’s something good for release, even more for frontpage news. to me, the WORD i CREATED does not suit this.

Hey guys, i appreciate everyones opinion on icons that are cut-outs or ports versus fully original pieces. I love featuring many of the beautiful and unique creations from the many talented designers that contribute to the forums, and am grateful that they do, both as someone who loves customizing his set-up with their work, and as a writer who gets to write about these designs, however it’s erroneous to think that in featuring a derivative work, some more original piece was bumped out of the way, I try to bring to the FP things that are fun, interesting, and that would make good icons, i think however it got made this icon is delightful to use, and i made sure to credit the actual designer of the toy. just my two cents, as they say everyone is entitled to their opinion, and i for one love writing for a site where people care enough to voice their thoughts.

Kevin: i’m glad you enjoyed the Jonas piece, it was great fun doing it, and there are more Insider pieces in the works,
